The Concordia Graduate Student Association in Translation is pleased to announce its 10th annual Graduate Student conference. This year we will be considering, among various subjects, translation as a "gendered" activity. Translation Studies and Gender Studies can bring us to a new level of awareness of the shifting nature of language, meaning and identity throughout history and in today's society. For our decennial colloquium we will be revisiting this theme in its various forms.
We welcome submissions from students working in Translation Studies and other related disciplines that shed light on gender and translation.
Some possible questions to consider:
- Can texts or their translations be thought of, in themselves, as "gendered"? How does the role of the translator relate to the roles of men and/or women in society?
- How do gender, sex and/or sexual identity play into texts and translations?
- How do feminist theories inform our understanding of translations?
- How do translations throughout history reflect different views of the translator in society?
- How does gender in translation relate to themes such as nationalism, geography or war?
- How does gender in translation relate to medical or scientific fields?
Submissions may be in either French or English and should include an abstract of approximately 200-250 words. Please submit your proposal electronically to tragrad@alcor.concordia.ca before 5 pm, February 18, 2011.
