Announcing the FIT XIX World Congress
The International Federation of Translators XIX World Congress—Bridging Cultures—will bring together translators, interpreters, terminologists, and other professionals from all over the world to discuss topical issues. Over 75 educational sessions will be offered in a variety of categories. Events and activities will allow for opportunities to network, mingle, and socialize.
FIT is an international federation of associations of translators, interpreters, and terminologists gathering more than 100 associations from all over the world. Its purpose is to promote professionalism in the disciplines it represents. FIT is also concerned with the conditions of professional practice in various countries and strives to defend translators' rights in particular and freedom of expression in general. FIT maintains formal operational relations with UNESCO.

Documentário "Língua: Vidas em português"
"Língua - Vidas em Português" é um documentário de 105 minutos co-produzido por Brasil e Portugal e filmado em seis países (Brasil, Moçambique, Índia, Portugal, França e Japão). Dirigido por Victor Lopes, o longa-metragem é um mergulho nas muitas histórias das língua portuguesa e na sua permanência entre culturas variadas do planeta. Em "Língua", a lusofania é sobretudo fala, surpreendida do cotidiano de personagens ilustres e anônimos de quatro continentes. Em cada um deles, o português amalgamou deuses, melodias, climas, ritmos. Misturou-se aos alimentos e às paisagens. Foi reinventado centenas de vezes e alimentado por sucessivas de colonizadores, imigrantes e descendentes.
Em Portugal e Moçambique, no Brasil e em Goa, desenham-se os quadrantes de uma herança portuguesa, sempre surpreendente e permanentemente renovada. Acompanhando as trajetórias de seus personagens, e ouvindo suas experiências e sensações, suas memórias e esperanças diante do futuro, o documentário reproduz o movimento de uma língua que ganhou o mundo e que refaz seus caminhos na expectativa de se reencontrar.

O acordo ortográfico, que pretende unificar a escrita em todos os oito países de língua portuguesa e projetar o idioma no cenário internacional, entrou em vigor no Brasil no início do ano sem muito alarde. Mas em outras partes do mundo lusófono, a reforma provoca polêmica.

World Social Forum Dakar - Call for volunteers in EUROPE and AFRICA
This is a first call for volunteers. Sign up only if you meet all the conditions.
The WORLD SOCIAL FORUM will take place in Dakar, Senegal, West Africa from Feburary 6 to 11, 2010.
The WSF Organizers have asked Babels to manage interpretation during this forum. Several other fora (Migrants Forum, Inhabitantants Forum, Health Forum, Science & Democracy Forum...), will be held in the week prior to the Forum. We will be pooling our combined means with some of them, so will need some people from February 1st.
A strong team of local African language volunteers is presently being recruited and will be trained in Dakar. We will also need a number of EXPERIENCED and PROFESSIONAL interpreters from outside Senegal for other languages.
The list of required languages will be compiled from the list of speakers and the requests of the participant delegations, but will mainly be French, English, Portuguese, Spanish and Arabic.
Due to budgetary constraints,WE CAN ONLY SELECT VOLUNTEERS FROM AFRICA AND EUROPE. Tickets from the Americas or Asia are unfortunately too expensive.
In accordance with BABELS rules, we will ensure there is a balance of experienced and first-time interpreters in the booths. The selection process will also be TRANSPARENT and INCLUSIVE. We will document every step of the selection process and report on it publicly, via the Babels forum and mailing list.

AVAILABILITY : we will be organizing training sessions for community interpreters prior to the Forum. If you can come earlier to help with this training, with the additional fora or general logistic tasks please tell
us.
The WSF-OC will pay for your ticket and accomodation. There will be a per diem of 15000 cfa/day (22€) to cover your food and transport (which will cost less than that). Accommodation will probably be in shared flats. More information on logistics will be provided later on.
YOU NEED TO HAVE A VALID PASSPORT (six month remaining validity) AS WELL AS YELLOW FEVER VACCINATION. Visa requirement depends on your nationality, check with the Senegalese Embassy in your country.
