Lack of translator stalls arraignment of Taiwanese fraud suspects
MANILA, Philippines - The arraignment of 15 Taiwanese who are allegedly part of a Southeast Asian syndicate involved in credit card and online fraud has been reset because there was no translator who can read them the criminal charges in Chinese.
A source told The STAR that the Parañaque Regional Trial Court Branch 258 has rescheduled the arraignment on July 30. The source said of the 15 accused, only two can “understand a little English. The rest (neither) speak nor understand” the language.
The Taiwanese were arrested by agents of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Technical Investigation Division and Intelligence Services who raided their den last year. They were charged with violating the Access Devices Regulation Act of 1998.
According to the NBI, the accused hacked online websites to acquire credit card information of the clients. Once they have the information, they make online purchases or transfer money from the credit card account to Paypal, then to an account in the Philippines and withdraw the money using an automated teller machine.
The syndicate members also reportedly pose as legitimate businessmen in the Philippines and sell non-existent products to victims who use credit cards.
“If there is a customer abroad, he will pay 50 percent, but there will be no product. If there is shipment, it only contains rocks or sand or fake items. The names on the shipment are not the names of the real owners of the shipment,” NBI’s Palmer Mallari said in a previous interview.

The European Commission Representation in the UK, the Translation Group at Imperial College London and the VSI Group are holding a full-day seminar on subtitling aimed at students of modern languages and translation. This e...vent examines some of the most significant changes to have taken place recently
in the subtitling field.
The seminar will include talks on the audiovisual industry and subtitling workshops, followed by an early-evening panel discussion.
The subtitling workshops will cover the following language combinations:
English into French/or German/or Italian/or Spanish;
French/or German/or Spanish into English.
Participants must bring their own laptops and earphones for the practical exercises and will be e-mailed a text to prepare in advance for the workshops.
Time: 11.00 for the seminar.

Google quer preservar línguas em extinção
O Google está lançado um projeto para ajudar a salvar línguas em perigo de extinção. Prevê-se que 50% das sete mil línguas faladas no mundo desaparecerão até 2100.
O objetivo é usar a tecnologia para ajudar na preservação dessas línguas. Através do site Endangered Languages (“línguas ameaçadas”), textos e gravações de áudio e vídeo podem ser carregados para montar um arquivo online da língua ameaçada.
A apresentação do projeto lembra que a importância de uma língua vai muito além da comunicação. É um acervo vivo de conhecimento, valores culturais e história, incluindo conteúdo científico, médico e botânico. “Com frequência, a perda de uma língua está relacionada à opressão e à injustiça”, acrescenta o vídeo disponível no site do projeto.
No site, um mapa-múndi localiza as línguas com pontos cuja cor indica o nível de ameaça. Aquelas em estado mais crítico aparecem com pontos vermelhos. O mapa mostra várias nessa situação no Brasil, entre elas o idioma xipaya, do Pará, considerada “criticamente em risco” por ter apenas dois falantes vivos. Outros idiomas ameaçados no País que aparecem no mapa incluem o xokleng (Paraná), Karo (Rondônia), kaiwá (Mato Grosso do Sul) e yaté (Pernambuco).

Gilberto Gil vai traduzir canções do musical 'O Rei Leão'
Gilberto Gil foi convidado para fazer a versão brasileira das músicas do musical O Rei Leão, informou a coluna de Mônica Bergamo, do jornal Folha de S.Paulo. As canções originais são de Elton John.
O Rei Leão estreia em São Paulo em março de 2013. Em cartaz há 15 anos em Nova York, o espetáculo já foi produzido em 19 países e tem bilheteria acumulada de US$ 4,8 bilhões.

Christos Tsiolkas apresentou-me, em «A Bofetada», a tradutora Tânia Ganho. Foi devido a este livro que conversámos pela primeira vez. Algum tempo depois, saiu «O Filho do Desconhecido», de Alan Hollinghurst, com outra excelente tradução da mesma tradutora.
